Weather permitting, the City of Sand Springs will resume performing live tests of its storm warning siren system the first Wednesday of each month beginning on Wednesday, April 2, 2014.
Monthly live tests provide a check to make sure the sirens are sounding properly. The sirens are tested in a silent manner on a regular basis using the system’s electronic components.
Warning sirens are intended to alert people who are outdoors of approaching dangerous weather. Although the sirens can often be heard indoors, their purpose is to provide outdoor alerts where people may not have immediate access to critical weather information.
Sand Springs Emergency Management officials recommend that residents monitor local media during severe weather events or purchase a NOAA weather radio to receive storm warnings. Residents in the city limits can also receive tornado warnings affecting their specific area via recorded phone message, e-mail and/or text by signing up for free Blackboard Connect® alerts on the City’s website – www.sandspringsok.org.
